Why should people have a job and earn money? Can we get to a stage where everyone in society just lives a good quality life without having a job?

Remember this, that you cannot do everything yourself. Some are good at cultivating, some are good communicators, some are good at writing. So let's consider a hypothetical situation in which we do not work. How would you get food, clothing, or shelter? Maslow's first level of needs. How would you save yourself from the heat and the cold? How would you see that the things that are around you can be structures, and even gardens? You cannot do all of these things yourself.

Therefore, we outsource. But your ability has a value and the ability of the opposite person also has a value. By exchanging things mutually, both of you live a balanced life. That method was changed from the exchange of goods to the monetary medium. Now, even today, as we speak, money is earned by doing work. If we look at the deepest ancestors like humans or even animals, we humans used to hunt and that was the job; even today animals work hunting, protecting them, understanding the climate and designing their own caves.

Your question is very logical because today we have manipulated the world of work from our side. We go with the flow and hardly reflect on what we're good at. And this non-reflection thing just gets boring.

But, imagine working in the domain, which you love, if you are an artist, it can be painting, singing or writing; If you love working with machines, you may be inventing or creating a new product; Being good with customers goes into CRM, customer relations or communications. Hope you get the idea.

Working broadens and expands our mind, makes us social, which is what we humans are. But work is important, it shouldn't be eliminated, otherwise we as humans would stop thinking, stop being busy and socialize.

But surely there has to be a change in the way we think about work and to make sure there is a balance between work and life.

Because a job helps you survive in a capitalist world. Because a job addresses the basic needs of Maslow's pyramid (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maslow%27s_hierarchy_of_needs) and allows for self-actualization (problem solving, being creative, the urge to prove yourself, peer recognition).

We could get to a stage where jobs are out of date, if machines can do all the work for us. But when this enslavement of machines ends, and machines attain a higher intellect than humans ever can, I don't think our quality of life has improved that much. I imagine creative people and people with drive would long for the days when they had a job and an outlet for their passions.

"What a man can be, he must be." Without the need for employment, we ignore human potential.
