I have over thirty years of experience dealing directly with government workers. Twenty of those years were active duty military men. A couple of them were when I was working for the Census Bureau as a manager in charge of technology.

The active duty military is a bit like a government job when you are in a non-combat job and not in a war zone. But the military can bite you and spit on you when you are no longer much more valuable than the civilian government sector.

I was doing network administration when LANs were new, around the time Exchange first hit the streets. I spent most of my days dealing with the computer "problems" of government employees. The question also depends on what type of job. After I retired from the military, I took a temporary clerical job at the Census. Basically, during the two years that the census operations were in place, they set up offices across the country and then took them down once the census was completed.

In typical government employee ethics, he hated myself because I was making him look bad.

I was also a donkey on the side of the regional offices. These were the permanent employees of the government. They hated me. Whenever there was a problem that he had to put on his level, he did not leave it at that. They may have been the top echelon, but I treated them like they were there to support the people at the front. That in my mind, they were. The status quo is that issues, once referenced by submitting a ticket, would remain open indefinitely. But I wouldn't settle for that. I called again to get progress reports, and this was something new to them. If they circled me too long, I'd go over their head. I was on the phone with someone in Maryland or DC at one point.

That kind of aggressive "I don't give a shit" attitude is probably normal in private companies that depend on efficiency and achieving bottom line results. In the federal government, it is an unpleasant oddity.

All of that to say, if you want a job where you don't have to rise above the lowest common denominator to be successful, where inefficiency is incentivized with more money to solve the problem, then get a permanent federal job.

If you're hard-working, ambitious, and want to make a lot of money, stay in the private sector unless you're low-skilled or in a field that's not in high demand.

17 lpa is even less than a fresher software engineer salary let alone 7 years of experience.


All the above is bullshit. No one is paying 2 crore or even a crore to a 7 yrs experienced software engineer in India. You need atleast 12–13 yrs of experience for that and a lot of luck in the form of competing offers, past compensation which should be sufficiently high to get a good enough hike which will enable you to get into that exclusive 70 lpa club in India(base salary plus bonus plus stocks). Coming to the question yes 17 lpa after 7 yrs of experience in India is less but not that bad, remember one thing that you are still earning far more than 60% of the population in the country and probably more.

  2. My father is a Class-1 Government Officer and I live with my parents in our own 4 BHK Home in one of Porsche Locality of Bangalore. My father proudly tells everyone about the company I work for, my education, the quality of work I do and my salary. All his colleagues, my family members, my colleagues, friends and Society People who themselves are well educated see me as a great asset and I get great respect from them for my R&D work.

My Company provides all facilities like work from home, health insurance (20 Lakhs/Annum), 50 Lakh Term Insurance, High End Laptop, Gym Reimbursement, Free Breakfast, Lunch, Evening Snacks, Significant Discount on Company Products, Complete Internet Reimbursement, Cab Facility at reduced price etc. My Father is Class-1 Officer so I very well know these facilities are more than what Class-1 government job gives.
  4. I don’t feel the work is stressful because the work I do is my passion. I start my work at 10:00 am in morning and finish by 5pm. Nobody forces me to work after 5 pm or during any time of day. Sometimes, I become restless because of my passion, I do work till 7pm as I love to reach my goal.
  5. Now coming about Security, my father knows that even Class-1 officers get suspended if quality of work is not delivered on time. Quality work and passion ensures Job Security in private and government. If you are lazy in any highly reputed Job then you will get fired.
  6. I didn’t compare my job with any government job in any of above 5 points, because I don’t like comparison with other people.

In the Conclusion, I get all the respect, facilities, job security and people using my high technology products in my private R&D job. Think yourself about what you love to do, what makes you happy. Salary, Security , Respect etc are there in both private and government job but your happiness won’t be there in both. Try to find passion in Job you do.

I do not believe it. Except for a few high-level jobs, all government jobs pay more than their private counterparts. I have a friend who came to sbi po, so I am going to write down the total salary for sbi po below.

These are just the quantifiable values their are many more things that you can't quantify in terms of money like:

Unlimited medical reimbursement for self and 75% for the dependents for serious ailments,operations etc.

He gets 1% extra interest for saving,fixed deposits. It creates a huge difference.

He will get housing ,car,personal loans in simple interest not compound interest unlike me. Look at one more set of calculations for see how much it effects.

60lac loan @10% compound interest. Total amount payable equals 155lacs

Similary 60lacs loan @6% simple interest. Total amount payable after 10 years Equals 120 lacs. Difference of 35 lacs here as well.

Job security till 60.

He can give jaiib, caiib get promoted to scale 2 and will get extra increments for that.

Besides their will be 10% salary growth every year irrespective of anything.

While on private job yes people earn close to 25lpa and have work timings of 8hrs. But how many people have such private jobs? Also with advance of time i have to maintain my knowledge level to justify my salary as it increases. At the age of 45 stress and responsibilities invlcrease manyfolds in private jobs whereas it is just opposite for govt. Jobs.

After analysing all these points i think financially government jobs are way ahead of their private counterparts. Yes some private jobs are available with 8 hour work and 25lpa starting salary. You are lucky to get that but not all.

  5. Bank clerk: The schedules and transfers are fine, but the salary is low.
  6. RBI Assistant: The hours and salary are fine, but if you accept promotions, again the transfer is a problem.

I want to clear one thing for you here…Gazetted Officers draw more salary but at the same time they must attend field at any time if required. In general all government servants work from 9 to 5.

SSC CHSL,SSC CGL are some 9 to 5 jobs(Because of Non Gazetted at joining time ).

All government jobs gives you decent salary and increases with service experience(not compare with some MNCs).
