1.Mechanical Engineering is not just a title, it is an emotion. Do not select this course simply because of the lucrative job offers. Believe me, you will be doomed if you have this mindset. Instead, grasp the physical understanding of the topics. When you see the concepts of class 11 12 take practical form in our daily lives, you will fall in love with the subject and, for me, this is the most important quality you should possess as a mechanical engineer.

2. Most of the answers suggest learning some 3D modeling and simulation software. Yes, you should. Learn a solid modeling software very well. I will suggest NX. Be the master. Learn MATLAB. This may seem like a huge task at first. , but if you learn this while doing some projects, it will seem more sensible, believe me, nowadays coding is a very important factor in mechanical engineering, so have a basic knowledge of it, if you want to enter the sector of the Automotive later on, coding is essential (in R&D sectors).

But after that I learned what it is like for an engineering graduate to get a job in India (especially mechanical). For the past two years, I worked as a job seeker. My field of interest is design, I have also taken design courses. (even though he knew design softwares, people want him to have a certificate, so for the sake of the certificate I went to the CADD center). But I didn't get a job in my stream. They offer me only these jobs

  • CNC machine operator, operating the same during an 8-hour rotating shift (1st week from 8 am to 4 pm, next week from 4 pm to 12 am, after 12 a. M. to 8 a. M.). It not only operates the machine, but also to clean the machine, collect the weed and dispose of it, clean the floor of refrigerant oil. In addition, your senior officer must hold a diploma. I also got an operator job for an 8k package in cities like Chennai. I cannot pay my living expenses also with such amount, after that I got money from home. I stayed there doing these jobs for 1 year to gain experience, but that experience does not give me a good job. Finally, after experiencing all these things for about a year and a half, I went to my hometown.

In contrast, my friend (s) who don't know what R means in thermal engineering class (R stands for refrigerator, says resistance once teacher asks) got a job at BOSCH, another still has backlogs (cleared after 1-year, 2nd grade) got a job at Ford, Maramalainagar, Chennai. Many stories like these, one on TVS because of the influence of his maternal uncle. (Except for him, no one tells me how they got a job there). Like everyone else, I too experienced a situation called People Are Temporary.

Now, after two years of completing my degree, I work in my interested field, (design) in a private company. I also get this job by paying some people. NOBODY LOOKS AT MY BRANDS, KNOWLEDGE (there may be good people, but I didn't see anyone, yet now). I'm not a genius like Amir Khan in 3 Idiots, but I have some in my pockets too. But influence, paisa, speaks louder than knowledge here. These same things also happen to Civil's friends, but they went to the Middle East as their requirements are beyond that.

Only IT people have lived their life, they might also have a hard time getting a job, after getting the same in all their lifestyle changes (I saw a lot of people), in addition to the recommendation, they only accept people with food products. But as for us, after getting a job we are also looking for a job to get a better one with the current experience. I am 24 years old with good academics, my salary is now 9k. I have to work 2 more years to liquidate my link with the current company (it may be 12k after 2 years) and get another one for a higher salary. (I am basically from a middle class family, I am the first graduate and salary occupies an important place in my life).

This is my situation, not only mine but that of most of our country's graduates, especially Tamilnadu. So my free advice to you is PLEASE DO NOT LOOK FOR MECHANICAL ENGINEERING.

EDIT 1: Before I reply to the comments, I just want to share that I am very happy because my answer is seen by around 3000 users. It may be low for quora experts, but as a newbie, it means a lot to me. because it's one of the few questions I answered first.

First of all, I am not opposed to any IT person or their pay scales. I'm just saying that we (mechanics) are constantly looking for improvements both in our work / packages, in the ever-changing workplace. I am sure it should not happen with IT graduates, it can be one or two, then it will be installed in a company with good packages that too fast compared to us.

Second, about the GATE and IES categories. As I said before, I am not a genius like Amir in 3 idiots, also GATE and IES are not just a matter of knowledge, it is also a phenomenon called LUCK. One of my friends, who is the head of my department with 9.6 CGPA, prepared for the same thing for about 3 years (even this year he attended GATE) but he didn't even get 25% of the cut-off mark. (you might be able to say, go to the best training centers, plan and prepare blah blah blah, went to TIME in Bangalore) You can't do it. Another friend of mine, attended it without proper preparation and scored 23 points (belongs to the MBC category, became a GATE scorer in 2014). Few may be able to do it with proper preparation, but it mostly depends on LUCK.

Finally, I want to suggest one, who said he was unemployed for the last year. My friend, you can go to operator job and then look for a WHITE COLLAR (Design, Quality, Maintenance) job with that knowledge and experience. Otherwise, the best way that our engineering religion follows is BANK EXAM. It is easier to prepare (compared to GATE, IES). There are many training centers that cost you less, go there and get ready.

I was very happy to be in the lead company, which is a Herculean task for aerospace graduates these days.

June 9, 2016 is my first day at the office. During the orientation, around 310 students were recruited across India. Of them, almost 200 are aero-mech together. But the sad truth is that aeronautical engineers are only 6 years old. Trust me, only 6.

Later we were assigned to different departments. About 90% of aeronautical mechanical engineers were assigned to commercial aerospace and defense units serving Pratt and Whitney, Boeing, airbus, etc. I saw a lot of the mechanical engineers. In fact, all of them face difficulties in understanding aeronautical terminology. I came across some who don't even know the physics of flying and turbo engines.

If they have hired enough aeronautical engineers, they can definitely understand the job better than anyone.

Even government organizations are doing the same. ISRO is well known for rocket and space research and they recruit through their own exam, which is based on a purely mechanical curriculum. DRDO, HAL, NAL who do a lot of aerospace work and place more importance on mechanical engineers than aeronautical engineers during recruitment. It saddens me that in the nation where Mr. APJ Kalam was born, an aeronautical engineer is not valued properly.

Point to be highlighted. I am not averse to the mechanical department. In fact, it is the mother of all engineering departments. What I feel is the right person in the right place makes society better. If I had worked on IC motors it would definitely take me longer to understand their physics and give value at work and there is a greater chance that I will end up with silly mistakes. The same case with mechanical engineers when they work on aeronautical engines, aeronautical structures, etc. I had given the same comments in my evaluation interview.

Tip:

If you desperately want to work in aerospace companies, do mechanical engineering in bachelor's degree and continue aerodynamics in a master's degree at top-tier institutes. Many opportunities to enter major companies.

But if you want to be a good aeronautical engineer, do both a bachelor's and a master's degree in aerospace. It will definitely be a second preference in recruiting, but once you get the chance, you will definitely be the best at demonstrating your aerospace expertise.

Did they go to a major university with an active research community? Most small schools do not have the resources to properly deliver an engineer.
Did you work for real companies on internship programs during the summers? If the school didn't support it, they chose the wrong school. Did you think about receiving letters from your bosses?
Did they spend time (and money) taking additional courses, not necessarily in their field? That is, did they show a general interest in learning?
Did you work in a team building a project or doing any research? If they cannot be proactive, respectful of teammates, members of a work group, their boss will have to find them lonely projects. He won't like it, and neither will they.

For the love of God, can you write? Do they check their resumes? I can't count the resumes I've thrown away because the grammar was bad, the punctuation was wrong, or there were spelling mistakes. thoughts were unclear. If they can't get their ideas across, they're stealing from your company, that's what they get paid for. If your writing or presentation skills are poor, no one will listen to you. If they don't have enough drive and pride to control their work, they will be useless.

There is more, but I'll stop. Passing the tests above and mentioning at least one thing that makes me think they can do what I need, I would usually give them an interview. At least half of the people who made it this far did.

If you want a quick start to your career, you should start immediately after high school. Your first job is not in the industry. He's in school, preparing to sell himself to his potential employer. Don't go into that first interview unprepared.

Just for your entertainment, I was fired the Saturday before graduation when the aerospace company that had hired me canceled the project I would have worked on. On Monday I called another major company that I knew was hiring. On Wednesday I went to a bunch of interviews there and got three offers, one in the parking lot on my way out. I started next Monday feeling very lucky. I was out of work for only 6 weeks of my 41-year career. It is a great career if you are passionate about solving problems.
