What was the reason for the success of Steve Jobs? And how did Apple become what it is today?

I can't tell you exactly why, but I'm researching this for a future blog post. After reading various things about Steve Jobs, I saw these attributes:

  • I believed in impossible things so deeply that you might think they were real.
  • He warped the reality around him by doing the above.
  • It was mysterious (see the chapters Be The Elusive Object of Desire and Grandiosity in Robert Greene's latest book)
  • I don't listen to your customers
  • He manipulated those around him in any way he could. See Isaacson's bio for examples.

At apple today

  • It has gone from being an innovation and technology company to a marketing company.
  • It is excellent for creating a cult following.
  • You are listening more to your customers (which may not be a good thing)
  • You're resting on your laurels for inventing the iPhone (face it, Apple hasn't done anything disruptively innovative since - all products since are variations on the iPhone and Mac)
  • You are only gradually improving your products with each launch, enough to generate more money from your cult members.

IMHO, Apple needs more of Steve's mojo to get back on top. There are a lot of innovative people at Apple, the question is, will their disruptive ideas ever hit the market?
