What's the best career to pursue in the US?

There are many paths that lead to the answer to this question. I assume you are looking for a recommendation.

Let's start by identifying your strengths, interests, and family background. The easiest and fastest way to proceed is to choose the professions your parents chose because you can take advantage of their knowledge and experience. Then go with what you are good at and finally go with your interest.

If all else fails, try to see what works.

The best career path is the one you choose and the one you do. All fields need experience.

It's really hard to pin down (to some degree) because technology has disrupted industries so intensely and quickly that anyone aiming for a career will have to be strategic.

I think the safe paths to explore would be emerging technologies; developers etc, medical, supply chain / e-commerce and the food industry.

Regardless of the career that is chosen, I believe that people will have to be strategically flexible and have more than one source of income in the future.

  1. Don't join any institute just because it says 100% placement. You must review and verify the placement record. Maybe you can call someone high from that institute and ask about reality.

About salary:

  1. If salary was my preference, I would have chosen some business and had no problem entering the field of design.

First of all, let me tell you that the field of analytics is interesting. If you are new to Analytics or considering a career change, the first and foremost thing I would recommend is that you feel comfortable writing basic SQL queries. This is a fundamental part of your job, even if your job doesn't involve active coding. It will give you immense freedom and allow you to do your job without depending on anyone.

If you are absolutely new, you should start with 5 simple concepts:

1. Creating your first SQL table and storing some data.
2. Write some basic "Select" queries and understand how to filter data (where clauses).
3. How do unions work and what are the different types of unions?
4. What is aggregation and what are the different types of aggregations?
5. Get familiar with some basic functions like Date, String, etc.

I would recommend taking my "Introduction to SQL Queries" course.

Once you are comfortable with the SQL ecosystem and queries, I recommend that you take it a little further and learn some advanced queries.
1. Views, triggers, calculated columns.
2. Writing stored procedures, user-defined functions.
3. Understand how transactions work.
4. How to write dynamic queries (this is very useful and interesting).
5. Learn some interesting data types, like XML, spatial, and so on. (although you may not use them in day-to-day projects, they are interesting to learn)

This will help you step up as a consultant and a data engineer, where you will be in a position to dictate "correct" and "incorrect" ways of building marts. Make sure you are rock solid on Database architecture, Querying, a little DBA stuff and your business domain. A second path as a data engineer will be an ETL developer. An ETL developer will be responsible to move data from one system to another. By moving, what I mean is collecting data from say Amazon S3 or other Amazon Databases or CSV, or Oracle and stitching/cleaning them and storing them in say SQL server in a report able format (data marts). This will require you to know more about ETL and tools.

Another interesting path is a Reporting Analyst. Every company will have different expectations from an analyst. Generally reporting analysts are not expected to start from scratch (like building Tables etc.). The data will already be provided to you. You need to tell a good story and recommendations with that data. You will generally be expected to know a few reporting tools like tableau or QlikView or even Excel. You should be comfortable enough to Quantify a problem, how big is it and is it worth yours and your team's time to analyze it. You will need to study data after various A/B tests and provide your analysis. Many critical decisions will be taken based on your suggestions. You should be comfortable identifying outliers in a data. This is an interesting field. You might meet a lot of folks, get to know businesses, and consult on need basis.

A third path is the Data Science Path. To be honest, there will be a little learning curve if you are planning to switch careers and have no experience at all. If I were to give you a 500,000 ft view of what is data science and Machine Learning, I would say, it is identifying some data, inputting the data to an Algorithm, and the algorithm predicting something. The challenge here is 1 - Choosing the right data as input. This is where you will spend a lot of time. You will need to know the domain well, to choose, clean and modify the data before supplying to the algorithm.
2 - There are plenty of algorithms out there to achieve various results. Algorithms for predictions, Image Classifications, Videos, Clustering etc.
You need to know which algorithm to choose and best use for your situation. For example - You must have heard of Regression.
To give an example - it may happen that you give the same set of data to 2 different engineers. Both may use the same algorithm, but one of the engineer may produce a better accurate prediction. Why? He may have used different techniques to clean the data. This is where simple business domain knowledge and Mathematics help.

With these things in mind, take a few courses in acting. They usually come in series— beginners, intermediate, advanced. There’s stage acting and film acting, and while elements from both cross-pollinate, there are certain aspects to stage and film that are only suited to stage OR film.

Don’t stop with acting. Get into a choir. See where your vocal range is. Get into a beginning ballet class or jazz dance class. Both provide fundamentals which will help you move ahead (and keep you fit and limber).

Read a few books. Uta Hagen. Anne Bogart. David Mamet. History of the Golden Age of Theatre. Theatre in the Italian Renaissance. Theatre in the English Renaissance. Theatre of the Absurd. Dadaism. Mikhail (Michael) Chekov. Read “An Actor Prepares” with a grain of salt.

Get to know your body’s movements. Where you’re comfortable. Where you’re not. Where your thresholds for twisting are. Where you can reach. How deep you can stretch. Where you place stress on your feet, your back, your shoulders.

Catalogue your memories. Ones that make you ridiculously happy. Ones from when you were lividly enraged. Ones where you were afraid.

What you will find is that acting incorporates all of these things, either individually or simultaneously in varying degrees. To that end, the best instructor is the stage itself. Audition for live theatre, and take any part offered to you. Do your best to shine in that role, and any role that comes your way. Eventually, you go from clean-slate to confident.

I keep myself occupied most of the time and generally try to read as much as I can if not answer. Linkedin being one of the biggest source of learning where I find myself to be glued in.
Linkedin, in the past 9–10 months has transformed my life and changed my perspective to be an optimist. I was scrolling through my feeds and found an Article by Liz Ryan, who is Founder and CEO of Human Workspace.

It perfectly portrayed the month of performance review and how it actually takes place.What she mentioned is/was a great piece of advice for me and I would like to share it with you all:

Performance Reviews accomplish three big things. They:

  1. Remind you that you serve your boss(not customers or shareholders)
  2. Remind you that the significance of your work is up to your boss and not you
  3. Remind you that you’re hired help, in case you thought you were and artist.

The above three points are extremely simple to read but makes so much sense deep down.People who are in corporate and will be reading the answer,they will be able to relate to all the above stated points.Article vividly captured the environment of working in a corporate. That post took me took me to the flashback about how situations worsened for me, how my manager reacted in the situation how it all turn around.

The article she wrote is a short one but made me dive into deep thoughts and question myself, such as, How important it is to be in a place where you actually want to be in? How important it is to get out of the place where you don’t belong? and How important it is to embrace the struggle to get out of it because “Happiness, is not far”. The questions are extremely thought provoking and thus they inculcated the same thoughts after reading what you might be going through right now.

It’s mentioned in many books, individuals say it loud, until one faces himself. The day that individual enters that phase, a realization hits him, and hits him hard. The options left are not many except for:

Face it and get out of it as soon as you can or let the situation be whatever it is and let it happen again.

Though I am in a phase where my current condition is a bit ugly, but there are days where I feel good about the kind of endeavors I am pursuing and additionally about the people around me who have my back, holding on to me and motivating me to give in my best to the alternative that I am into. Remember, a single person is enough to keep you motivated, if you are looking for the validation for what you are doing is different from others.
Running a startup based on mental health, writing a book in which I will be sharing my experiences from the day I joined my first job and why I took the decision of choosing a different path are, a matter of fact, which I am into is what I am focusing on.

The article by Liz Ryan gave me an insight and led me to watch one of the videos of Zakir Khan which is immensely close to my heart and I usually watch that whenever I face an emotional breakdown.

To stand up for your self so that one day you can tell the world about your beautiful struggle of the achievements which are close to your heart. You don’t have to choose a career path straight away. Numerous people end up adopting professions they haven’t studied for. I know an Engineer who has become a Professional Trainer, an MBA in Finance who is working successfully in Advertising and a Psychologist who is working as an Editor.

Even if you study a certain subject and can’t find related jobs, you can always opt for certifications and diplomas to acquire academic knowledge about your profession. For example, I had studied English Literature in Bachelors, but was promoted as a Project Officer (National Communication Lead) at work. So, I enrolled in a Diploma Programme for Project Management.

Lastly, don’t stress about your career so much. Instead, focus on choosing the subject/s you enjoy the most and study it/them devotedly. If you work hard, good things will automatically happen.

And come to America for a Ph.D. Remember, the US PhD is mostly fully funded. But in this case, you must be prepared to do a PhD (that's not easy at all). In another case, you can join a PhD, but then talk to your professor about your problems and complete your core courses and switch from PhD to Master. So you will be able to complete Masters for free (you would have Double Masters, once in India and one here). You won't have to pay a load

I had a discussion over these type of questions with my friends here in US. What you can do is get your Masters degree in India. And come to US for PhD. Remember, PhD degree in US is mostly fully funded. But in this case, You have to be prepared to pursue PhD (That’s not easy at all). In other case, you can join PhD but afterwards talk to your professor about ypur problems and complete your core courses and switch from PhD to Masters’ Degree. Thus, you will be able to complete Masters for free (You would be having Double Masters- once in India and one here). You wont be having burdon to pay off your Loan and all. So it’s not risky in that contrast. But the risk can be is that you have to complete your PhD. So prepare your mind accordingly and go for it. I know many of the students won’t recommend to go for what I have suggested, but I can assure you that YES, It is possible. Good Luck !!
