What jobs are so unusual that most people don't know about?

We spend around 50% of the day preparing our classes and the other 50% of the day chatting with each other. The school usually provides the teachers with lunch on those days. Teachers who have children of their own often enlist their own children to help them set up.

But nothing is as fun as clean-up days after students leave for the summer. The outfits are the same. The music is the same. There are some year-end cleanup chores to do, like submitting report cards and other things. That takes a maximum of two hours. After that, you can start your summer vacation once your room is clean. Everything has to be knocked off the walls. Everything has to be boxed, so they can take it out of the room during the summer while they wax the floors.

It is much easier and more fun to tear things off walls than to put them on. The janitor puts a box of garbage bags in the hallway, and we take what we need, fill it up, and leave it in the hallway, all while stopping to chat a lot with our co-workers. Personally, I like listening to headbands from the 80s as I rip things off the walls of my classroom.

Some of the teachers are known to bring wine into their classrooms on those days.

To work in local government:

I wrote it carefully, so I'm going to unpack two key parts:

  • By "all but the largest and most professionalized," I generally mean companies that are not yet public. When they go public, most technology companies need their processes to be audited and certified so that a programmer cannot arbitrarily enter and access user (or other) data. Of course, sometimes this process involves verification by just one other person, so the correct combination of just two people (usually a programmer plus someone in a gatekeeper position, such as a database engineer or version engineer) You can still get unauthorized access to each and every data.
  • By "complete," I mean a generalist programmer who is well versed in all or most areas of the system. Some companies have "tiers" of coders, so junior coders may not have the necessary experience or access.

Your data is (usually) just a bunch of rows in a database. Once access is gained, it is trivial to change, because the engineers wrote the encoding scheme. Typically, most engineers in a small or medium-sized company have access to that database or, if they don't, they have access to enter the code into production (which can access that database). There may even be internal work processes to prevent them from doing this, such as rules that say you should ask permission or have your code reviewed, but these are just rules, not physical or cryptographic safeguards. Any sufficiently competent programmer who wants to break those rules can simply break them.

Some exceptions may include financial services companies started by extremely conscientious and professional people, who physically or cryptographically protect access to key user data from their initial design (or at least shortly thereafter) **, but this is rare. Most startups emerge from a semi-experimental "minimum viable product," and when they first build something to see if someone wants to use it, most programmers don't bother to incorporate security.

In general, probably the most dangerous startup (for you) is the company that is very successful but not yet in the process of going public, and that does not operate in the financial services or e-commerce sector (these sectors tend to impose certain regulations before). These companies have a lot of your data and have a large employee base: founders and early employees are less likely to mess with things as they have a vested interest in the honest long-term outcome of the company; later employees, less.
