What is the most exciting career in technology?

It depends on what your definition of "interesting" is.

I was always a retoucher. I took apart an alarm clock when I was around seven years old or so, just to see what the pieces looked like. Not that I did or that I could put it back together, as much as I would have liked to.

As I got older, I liked to "fix things." Bicycles not working properly, tools damaged. In high school I found a non-working PA, so I broke it and completely rebuilt it using a set of schematics that I bought from the electronics store where I was working part-time with a close personal friend. I bought the components and built them from the group.

I bought the components and built them from scratch. Interestingly, despite the dangerous voltages involved, using nothing but a soldering iron and a voltmeter really worked when I was done.

I've always liked to "fix things." I went into electrical engineering in college, no wonder, working as a part-time repairman, fixing everything Olsen Electronics was selling at the time.

My point is that he loved what he was doing because he could do it without anyone's help or instructions. For ME that was "interesting". If I was "showing off" it was for an audience of just one: me. Nobody else knew.

I got into IT when the electrical engineering market turned south in 1987 and networks were coming into existence. It was both challenging, and within my abilities and I loved being able to fix what others could only marvel at. At 65 I got a Cisco certification because I was worried: what if I retired in name only and had to go back to work, what would I do?

Find your own passion and follow it.

Information technology is a very broad field to name particularly any language that may lead to a better future. And each different programming language is fundamental to one process or another.
