Important point (for most students), that is, PLACEMENTS: Both MTech and MS will get the same opportunities, the same job profile, both can participate in the placement campaign for the same companies, but the main thing is that MTechs are allowed to sit in placements after 1.5 years and MS can sit in placements after 2.5 years (and that too after taking NOC as their guide).

So why invest (not waste) your extra year in MS? This is totally up to you. If you are interested in research you should definitely go for MS and if you are only interested in locations most people prefer MTech. Many students who were unable to get admitted to MTech due to a low entry score often enter MS, where they invest there for one more year instead of going for one-year GATE preparation and get the same placement opportunities. While doing MS, you can learn more particularly about a specific problem or research area, while at MTech there are many courses that need to be taken, making it difficult to focus on a particular research area.
