What is the difference between distance, online and regular degree education?

I answered a similar question: Harlan Williams' answer to What is the difference between a regular, private, correspondence and distance course?

In my response, I point out that distance learning is a broad term that encompasses correspondence, the Internet, and television or telecourse courses that are rarely used. Distance learning just means that the instructor and students are not geographically located; They can be in different parts of the world, as long as they have a means to communicate and share content.

Online courses are a subset of distance courses; they are simply courses that are taught over the Internet. Although they are a subset, they are by far the largest means of delivering distance courses, to the point where when (in higher education) we talk about distance education, we are really thinking online.

Currently, there is still a kind of stigma attached to fully online programs; academia (this is how we refer to the entire education society) considers online programs to be less rigorous and therefore less valuable than traditional programs. However, this opinion is slowly changing. Even programs that resist pressure to put the entire program online are putting individual courses online. In about 10 years, I would expect this stigma to be a thing of the past.

In the United States they have private meetings regarding accreditation and the Department of Education.

The regular degree is generally known as traditional or face-to-face. This means that the teacher and students are in the same physical room at the same time. This could be on campus or at an off-site location. The key is that the student and the teachers are together.

Distance education means that the instructor and the student are not physically together. This could mean a video class where the teacher is in one location with some students and other students are in a class elsewhere. It could mean that each student has a separate video connection. Distance can also be where the teacher and students connect via the Internet. It can also mean that teachers and students communicate by post. I've never heard of it, but distance education can also be done over the phone. Distance education can occur with the teacher and students in class at the same time (synchronous) or at different times (asynchronous).

Online education is a subset of distance education. In higher education, online education still has courses with a schedule of deadlines and meaningful interactions with faculty. In contrast to correspondence education, where students are largely self-taught and at their own pace. Competency-based education is also not always considered online education. The key differentiator is the role of the faculty in the process and whether the course is of a fixed duration.
