What do I need to do to get a good job after a B.Tech in CSE from an average university?

Keep CGPA over 7.5 for safety, otherwise 7 is enough. Start practicing coding on different websites online if companies don't visit your campus, then try off-campus.

Recently one of my friends from school (2 years older than me) called me and we had a good conversation after a long period of time. He graduated from an unknown university. He completed his B.Tech in Electrical Engineering.

He did not receive any job offer.

  • In India, there are more than 4000 engineering colleges and according to AICTE there are 14 lac engineering positions.

Every year India produces approximately 14 lac engineers, which are huge in number.

The market works on the principle of supply and demand, the problem is that the demand is lower (unskilled engineers) and the supply is high.

Even if you have no CSE experience, people ask you for skills like ML / AI / Android / Web-Development / Data Science / BlockChain / UX / UI Design if you want a really quick job after graduation.


Now the problem is that these engineers (who do not belong to CSE) study their main subjects in their 4 years of engineering, but the market wants more skilled software developers.

And I bet if you are very handy in some framework like React.js, you will definitely get a job right after graduating from a good tech startup, they look so bad and are ready to pay high. It doesn't matter if you are from any university in India. It is just a game of how to use LinkedIn / Twitter / Instagram. I recently completed an internship at a Bangalore-based startup via Instagram.

If your branch is different from cse, the full syllabus is not up to date, it is old. You won't get a job studying circuits / transformers / motors in your engineering. People don't need it, even if they need it, they want an experienced person to come and fill the vacancy, so newbies don't have a chance here.

But you will get a management job offer or offers from some mass hiring company, who will fuck you in every possible way in the next 2-3 years and you will not learn anything, you will not learn, you will not improve, you will not increase your salary. Total waste of time and energy.


What is the solution?

The solution is different for each year student and also depends on the branch.

Let's talk about a computer science student-

First year

  • In your freshman year, explore things, don't limit yourself to your core subjects. If I say explore, that doesn't mean Netflix and Chill. It means trying different, different things.
  • For example, try Graphic Design / UX Design / Content Creation / Animation / Web-dev / Android / Gaming (Play and Do Both - * Unreal Engine *) / Content Writing / OMG, there are a lot of things.
  • If you are interested in any of them, it will dominate you, it will give you confidence at the GOD level and will definitely also make a very good image of yours at your university.
  • Work on your personal brand and portfolios, I bet you will be in a much better position after 4-5 years.

Second year

  • Considering you guys, the ones who wasted your first year in love-sovereignty.
  • You also have a lot of time tbh, the same goes for you.

Third year

  • Now that you don't have time to explore, you should have to stick with something for the next 2 years to get a desirable result. Now, I consider that there are two types of people.
    • Type A: one who is serious about studying.
    • Type B: One that is not.
  • Type B, you will get 3.5 LPA work so take a pill to relax :)))))))))))
  • Let's talk about Type A people, I'm considering these people to be the most motivated. They have two options.
    • You are good at coding.
    • You are not into coding.
  • Peeps who are good at coding should definitely stick with it, start competitive programming and development (android / web), learn how to use LinkedIn, make good connections through these online platforms, and try to make a personal, online brand. That is all.
  • Those who are not good at coding you have two options, one is for the government. jobs and start preparing or look for an MBA from some of the best B schools, your life will be quiet after that, OR other options continue the same with the name of the GATE test if you want to stay in a technology career, download the study program , get papers from previous years and sit at the table and solve them all. There is a wealth of material available online (MadeEasy / Ace Academy postal courses, etc.). Get a good rank to join M.Tech from some top tier IITs.

Fourth year

  • If your IQ is high, prepare for some competitive exam now, for example Bank / PO / Railways / SSB / State PCS / UPSC, but choose wisely because you have no more options now if you want a job.
  • For an average student, it will take 1.5-2 years to prepare for the GATE test, so aim for at least 45-50 points on this test and work hard as hell from now on.

Since your university is not good, in case you are interested in startup, you can too, even I founded an ecommerce startup myself in my freshman year, but failed later and which is a different story.

I met a lot of people in this field and learned a lot about it. So, in case you're interested too, here we go-

The first thing to look at is the market size, let's say the market size is Rs 100, then you won't be able to make much money in the future.


The market that is huge in size, such as Education / Food / Health / Fashion / Technology / Hospitality / E-commerce, you can make a lot of money here, you can't even imagine it. Or you can also try to build a Saas product

If your programming skills are good, you can expect a decent job in a product-based company. Securing a job in a service-based company is an easy task. Improve your communication, English and quantum skills and you are good to go. There are many vacancies in the testing and support department, but I advise you to stay away from them as there is no growth. Corporate sector jobs are less about skills and more about networking. Many companies do not hire externally, but rather promote internal growth. So spend a lot of time and improve your LinkedIn profile.
  2. Go to higher education like GATE, MS. I think this is a no-brainer. If you are not interested in working in the business sector, or if you want to do research or other related things, you can take higher studies. Be aware that the competition is very tough at GATE. MS is not easy either. Also, MS may not be a suitable option for many either, as it is very money-consuming. For M. Tech, IISC Banglore is the best option followed by IIT Bombay. Therefore, guide your GATE preparation accordingly. The general rule is usually: IIT, NIT students opt for MS, while others opt for M.Tech in IIT, NIT. Many people also drop out of college after 2-3 years of work experience.
  3. Go to competitive exams in other domains like CAT, UPSC, SSC, etc. Again, this is purely interest based and needs no explanation. People also quit their jobs to pursue this.
  4. Start your own business in the form of application development, web development, blogging, freelance work, etc. People generally take it as an easy approach, but fail to realize that this path is not for everyone. Here it takes a lot of time, hard work and patience. If you fail here, getting a job after this is also very difficult, as I mentioned in point # 1. But you will learn a lot here.
  5. You can join a startup. Usually the pay will not be good here, but you will learn a lot in terms of development, scheduling, and time management as there is less business management involved. The experience after this wouldn't be of much value either, but it will surely improve your skills, which is very rare in the IT industry.

My apologies if I missed or didn't add something. The information technology sector is very broad and there are several options within and outside the industry. It depends solely on your interests. If you are an engineer who has just finished engineering and has no job, don't be discouraged. You still have a lot of options, even if it seems like you don't. Unemployment is a major problem in our country, but not something that cannot be overcome.

You can go any post graduation, it maybe mtech, mba or any other.

You can go for ias or stuff.

What to do next completely depends on where do you want yourself in next 5–7 years. Find your goal, start by finding what do you need to get to that goal and the next step will be deduced.
