What are the best courses that are outreach for biology students?

Biology is a vast and intriguing subject and there is much more that future scientists and biologists can contribute to the development of biological science.

The famous most talked about course for a biology student is MBBS. Children are told to sign up to be a doctor or an engineer, when they haven't even started learning alphabets.

Do not choose to enter medicine (or any other field) under pressure from anyone. If you are really interested in pursuing medicine, there are several other courses in addition to the normal MBBS. Follow the link for other related courses.

Medical Courses: List of Medical Courses after 12 in India

Medicine is just one of countless courses available to a biology student.

Biomedical engineering: is the application of engineering principles and design concepts to medicine and biology for health purposes (for example, diagnostic or therapeutic).

Food technologists: The fundamental task of the food technologist is to offer preservation, preservation and processing techniques for the food to be packaged. In addition, they verify compliance with the procedure during food processing and make sure there is no contamination or adulteration. Ensuring high-quality nutritional value in food products by placing quality raw materials is an additional job for a food technologist.

Research Scientists in the Food Technology Industry - Research scientists work to improve yield, taste, nutritional value, etc. of packaged foods so that they are more widely accepted by consumers.

Genetic engineering: It involves the direct manipulation of the genome of an organism through biotechnology. It is a set of technologies used to change the genetic makeup of cells, including the transfer of genes within and across species boundaries to produce new or improved organisms.

Public Health Entomology: It is a study focused on insects and arthropods that impact human health. The work also includes research on the behavior and ecology of several of these species. A person in this field has a good opportunity to meet and connect with local and state officials. Many universities, government agencies, and chemical companies are looking for people to hire in this field.

(Where to request it?

The Vector Control Research Center (VCRC) at the University of Pondicherry offers a two-year postgraduate course in this field. You can also check out Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, Delhi).

BSc at the National Dairy Research Institute: With two centers in Karnal and Bangalore, it offers BSc in quality control in dairy processing and BTech in dairy technology.

Microbiology: is the study of microscopic organisms, such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protozoa. This discipline includes fundamental research on the biochemistry, physiology, cell biology, ecology, evolution, and clinical aspects of microorganisms, including the host response to these agents.

Although when we look at a broader term, an ecologist is someone who studies the interaction of animals with their environment. So you can see from the example above that a discipline in biology can have several other subfields.

During the course of studying biology, one acquires a wide range of knowledge that helps one understand the diversity of life. You get to the role of biology in society, including the environment, energy use, healthcare, agriculture, and much more.

During the degree program, the skills you acquire will be as important as the knowledge. If you want to enter the field of research, you must work through your thought process to design experiments. You should also develop the habit of applying scientific principles to problems and further communicating these findings in relatable ways.

There are many potential jobs for a biology degree. There are huge fields to choose from. When choosing the best career options in biology, you need to be confident enough and stay positive and motivated.

Personally, I love one of the fields of biology, that is, biomedical engineering.

Biomedical Engineering is the fusion of engineering principles and medical procedures in order to create solutions for healthcare. Essentially, this involves collaborating with physicians and medical researchers to develop medical equipment and devices, as well as computer systems and software solutions related to the field.

There is a great university called Lovely Professional University.

The university has recognized the important role that biotechnologists play in industrial development and has sought to implement an integrated approach to education and research. The department strongly believes that a teacher should be involved in active research to stay in touch with recent developments in the subject in order to offer the latest knowledge.

The department has a strong interdisciplinary research and teaching foundation in life sciences and engineering that prepares the student for industry as well as research programs.
All the basic infrastructures necessary to carry out teaching and research programs in different areas of Biotechnology have been developed in the department.

This course is for individuals who have an interest in carefully studying a career in the front-line areas of Biotechnology of Animal, Plant and Microbial Cell Biology Waste Management and Genetic Sciences.

Career options after this course at LPU:

Food and Pharma Biotech Companies - These are the largest biotech employers in the private sector. They are employed as research agents to develop new and innovative assistive techniques in the health and agricultural sector.

Agricultural sector: The emergence of exciting job opportunities for genetic engineers for the development of genetically modified food products such as high-yield seeds, seedless fruits and other similar products.

Research Laboratories and Hospitals Renowned medical and biological research facilities across the country offer entry-level positions to graduate genetic engineers in clinical research and diagnostics.

Universities / Institutes: Biotechnology as a field of study is growing at an accelerated rate. The growing interest of students in this topic has also increased the demand for qualified and trained teachers and professors. Many holders of undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in genetics are recruited for teaching positions in different universities and institutes in India and abroad.

I hope this helps.

All the best!

Biotechnology is more important because of its implications for health and medicine. Through genetic engineering, the controlled alteration of genetic material, scientists have been able to create new drugs, including interferon for cancer patients, synthetic human growth hormone, and synthetic insulin, among others.

Biotechnology is the technology applied to biology, molecular biology, genetics, and many other subfields of biology. Biotechnology uses cellular and biomolecular processes to create technologies and products that help improve our lives and nature.

The scope of Biotechnology has expanded to various sciences such as immunology, virology and other subjects such as health, agriculture, cell biology, plant physiology, seed technology, etc. The job of a biotechnologist is to modify or manipulate living organisms in laboratories to develop new products. .

There is a wide margin for the biology student if he does not want to go to MBBS

Like, Pharmacy: it has a very broad scope and can enter the government sector. you can open your own store after the experience and the pharmacy student receives a very good amount both in public and private companies and hospitals.

You can also go for homeopathic medicines or you can become a dental surgeon and doctor after doing BDS.

You can become a physical therapist and psychologists are also in demand these days.

Countries like Ukraine offer MBBS at a very reasonable price for Indian students.

Or B.Sc Nursing is another option.

  • BSC Biology/ Biological Sciences
  • BS-MS Dual Degree in Biological Sciences
  • MSC Wildlife Biology and Conservation
  • MSC Environmental Biology
  • MSC Environmental Microbiology
  • MSCConservation Biology
  • MSCBiology/ Biological Sciences
  • MSCApplied Biology
  • MSC Computational Biology
  • MSC Biochemistry
  • MSCMolecular Biology

Thanks !!

I would say taking Biochemistry made me understand everything the most out of any course, closely followed by Cell and Molecular Biology. I took both my senior year of undergrad, so I had a very strong background going into them.

Also, I took a psychology course called Evolution and Behavior and it made me understand evolution on a whole nother level from what I learned in Ecology and Evolution.

Bonus: As annoying as Statistics was/is, it’s essential no matter what you plan to do with your degree. If you can’t read and interpret a study you will go nowhere in science.

You mean, the best courses for a student having PCB combination in +2? Well, there are plenty of options. The options includes :

  • MBBS
  • BDS
  • BAMS (Ayurvedic)
  • BHMS (Homeopathy)
  • Bachelor of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry (B.VSc AH)
  • BSc Nursing
  • Integrated Msc
  • Biotechnology
  • BSc (Zoology, Botany)
  • Bachelor of Pharmacy (BPharm)
  • Bachelor of Physiotherapy
  • Medical Lab Technology
  • Paramedical courses

These are some of the options. Well, being a science student you definitely have the advantage of pursuing with non science career options.

Wish you success!
