Depression is often accompanied by inflammatory skin conditions such as psoriasis, acne, and rosacea.

Psoriasis is a hyperproliferative inflammatory skin disease that often appears as thick, red, scaly patches. Several studies have established that depression is a widespread challenge among psoriasis patients, which can modify the progression of psoriasis as well as the efficacy of treatments.

The connection between depression and acne has long been documented, especially in teenagers. Acne increases the risk of depression and suicide attempts. Depression can also aggravate acne.

Inflammation control represents an innovative approach to alleviating depression

Evidence shows that inflammatory cytokines induce not only signs of disease, but also true disorders in susceptible individuals and physically ill patients despite having no prior history of mental disorders.

Findings that inflammation can actually initiate depression and several chronic disorders suggest that targeting inflammatory responses could be a novel strategy for treating depression and associated health problems. Several studies are being done to treat symptoms of depression with anti-inflammatory drugs, including non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Encouraging results have been obtained by inhibiting inflammatory cytokines in psoriasis and treating COX-2 inhibitors in patients with depression.

Natural treatments to relieve symptoms of inflammation and depression

For decades, NSAIDs have been widely recommended for various aspects of flu-like symptoms or disease-related behaviors. Unfortunately, 25% of NSAID users encounter serious and sometimes fatal complications such as stomach ulcers and gastrointestinal bleeding. Newer NSAIDs, such as selective COX-2 inhibitors (Vioxx and Celebrex), have been associated with an increased risk of serious adverse cardiovascular events, including heart attacks and strokes.

In this scenario, the good news is that there are safer approaches. You can manage depression and anxiety without the side effects of antidepressant drugs or NSAIDs! Nutrients, anti-inflammatory herbs, and herbal remedies have been shown to relieve symptoms of depression.

By keeping inflammation under control, anti-inflammatory remedies can:

- Improves sleep and reduces headaches and anxiety.

- Helps rebuild the balance of nitric oxide and prostaglandins, contributing to the severity of depression, anxiety, and sexual dysfunction.

- Repairs the body's antioxidant defense.

- Improves vascular healing and repair.

- Restore the function and integrity of vascular cells.

Millions of people go undiagnosed or untreated for depression. Without treatment, depression can persist for 6 months or more, with an increase in the frequency and severity of the episodes.

If you feel the pain of depression, or your depression symptoms continue despite treatment with antidepressant medications, or your antidepressant medications become less effective, you may need to recognize inflammatory sources and benefit from anti-inflammatory treatment.

This is due to long personal experience with treatment resistant depression and the observation of several people around me taking antidepressants (I always ask them what they are taking and watch closely):

The first thing that will be offered to you is an SSRI (probably Zoloft, Prozac, or Celexa). If you are lucky, they will mitigate despair and replace it with vague apathy. I've seen them work for people, but I don't necessarily like who they become. I feel like they are more likely to work for people with more stressed and anxious depression. When they work, improvement is incomplete at best: they diminish the intensity of all emotions, not just sadness. If the first one doesn't work, your doctor will probably switch to another, and then another, and then another IN THE EXACT SAME KIND. If it almost works, they will add something to it to make it work better. They are unlikely to stop the marginally effective drug and suboptimal strategy, because a) SSRIs are relatively safe, and b) pharmaceutical companies have convinced them that they are effective. If you have a very severe depression, I would express my impatience with this process from the beginning and nip it in the bud. Be firm and have a list of suggestions for her to try other medications.

I have tried almost every antidepressant known to man except the newest. The only things that have worked for me are an older, lesser known tricyclic called Vivactil (get the brand name, the generic sucked) and Ritalin (short acting). The Vivactil began to act in 1 hour. Seriously. It got me thinking, "I wonder if I have enough pills around here to ..." to "Hey, life isn't that bad, I'm great." Ritalin works instantly, like 15 minutes. But I have to take it 4 times a day. That plus caffeine is the closest I've ever felt to happiness. Please note that I do not have an anxious type of depression. I have an inert and sleepy type. I would not get out of bed without this medication. I would never leave the house or interact with a human without it. Be prepared to beg and plead for this and probably be rejected, although there is growing evidence of its effectiveness. Not once has he gotten me "high". I have seen adderall work for other people in the same way.

Other drugs that I think are unusual enough to be of value to someone:

Latuda, it might make you anxious. It feels unique. It doesn't knock you out or confuse your brain. Relatively fast acting (within a week in my experience)

Trintellix - This would be awesome for someone with anger issues. It softens you without dulling you. You don't get that depersonalization you get with SSRIs

Duloxetine: I saw a family member go from crying every day to zero since starting the first pill. Mood improvement after 2 months, I'd say 70%.

Wellbutrin - This has never worked for me, but I have seen it produce a small energetic effect when added to one of the SSRIs. However, it may possibly poke a hole in you at A.

Pristiq: It was very effective for me as a single dose for immediate relief from "overwhelming despair." It worked in an hour. However, once it built up, it knocked me unconscious. I still have the rest of the bottle for emergencies.

Abilify: I have a friend with genetic bipolar disorder and this is the only thing that has worked for her.

Fight for yourself and do your own research.
