I think you need to rethink your strategy. You are in college, perhaps the one time in your life where people will do their best to connect you and give you answers, time, and energy. Use this for all it's worth!

Andy's response was very close to what I would advise. You may also have businesses related to your university's career center. Asking there first may open some doors. Talking to your instructors about the companies they recommend or are connected with could also help. In general, networking will be the key to most of your job search. If you don't have a strong LinkedIn profile, that's the first place to start. You need to embed keywords into your well-written, achievement-oriented LI profile, and you will find that you are the one being hunted and not the one who is hunting.

Good for whom? There are two main users in the job board universe: recruiters / employers and job seekers. So I would say that there are two different answers to this question based on your function. Employers can measure "how good" based on many metrics: job views, applicants, conversion rate, and so on. And for the job seeker? I'd love to read feedback on how job seekers benefit from job boards, as boards don't release metrics on how effectively they help job seekers. Be wary of the job pool that is built for and with $$$ from employers ... which is each and every one out there.

Here's a tip: get a job for your sophomore summer year. It can be any job in accounting or finance, but it will be a huge asset to you when applying for stellar third-year internships.

If you're into startups, reach out to Toronto / Waterloo venture capital firms or accounting firms that work with startups, like one run by Mark MacLeod (I'm not sure if you're still doing that).

I think the best place to start is at the college career center. Your student union will have one created with work geared toward college students and not necessarily graduates. www.alwaysajob.com has a ton of Toronto advertisements and you can always try aftercollege.com or collegerecruiter.com as well.

Finding a job in today's economy and in the midst of the pandemic has become really difficult and if you get through it with being an international student in the US, then it's another level of struggle altogether. Finding a job at OPT is one of the hardest things I've ever had to do. Let me give you a little background on how my job search started:

My job search history

I was preparing my first resume to begin my job search. I took some references from my old one and gathered all my achievements into an updated one. Then I uploaded it to job portals and LinkedIn. At the time, I was very excited and expected a lot of callbacks.

Nothing happened, except that I only got one or two calls asking me about my experience and knowledge. I didn't even get a single interview.

Then I asked a couple of friends to give me their resumes for reference. I made a few changes based on how they presented their information and started to post my resume once more with enthusiasm. I even emailed it to a few companies this time. The same thing happened again. I got a couple of calls, explained my course details and history, and everyone hung up the phone saying we'll get back to you.

Then I did what anyone with an internet connection would do: take the help of Google. Again I made a viable resume based on my online research and it honestly looked like the best document I had ever created! And again, it didn't lead to any concrete results.

And the cycle continued:

  • Editing resume
  • Excitedly waiting for an interview call
  • Disappointment

Then I got in touch with some of my friends in college who were looking for internships / jobs and I thought maybe they could help me. And guess what? They were also going through the same problems. It was then that I realized the importance of a consultancy and a bootcamp in the life of an OPT candidate. I know it sounds like a cliché answer, but that's the only thing that helped me, so do all the resumes you want, google all the tips, attend all kinds of networking events, but the kind of support you get from A consultancy can never be crowned by any of these methods.
