Should You Be Completely Honest About Your Job Interview Experience?

  4. If you say you have experience doing something, I hope you can do it (no learning curve or training time). It must be immediate and automatic. So what you've done is set my expectation that you can get things done in a fraction of the time it will actually take. So guess what, even if you don't get fired for being caught in a lie, you will likely get fired for looking incompetent and unable to do a good job. And that will follow you in your industry circles ("I don't want to hire this person, I heard they've been doing X for years and it still takes weeks for them to do a job that should be hours").
  5. Most importantly, picking up lies is VERY VERY easy for experienced interviewers. We have seen it all and we have heard it all. Yes! A friend of mine cleverly lied in a job interview and was finally selected.

Context:

In his CV, he had clearly mentioned that he belonged to Bihar. Furthermore, the interviewers had confirmed this verbally before starting the questioning. So his chances of selection were very, very less.

His interview went smoothly. He had answered almost all the technical questions. He performed exceptionally that day. But, he was sure they weren't going to hire him, because he wasn't a local resident.

Suddenly, one of the interviewers asked: What does your father do?

Considering all the facts about them, he lied: Sir, you work at a gas station in Guwahati. (a place in the northeast)

Interviewer (curious): Ohho, how old?

He (started counting on his fingers): Amm .. Sir, since the last 7-8 years.

Interviewer: Do you ever visit?

Him: Yes sir, I visit him during my vacation.

Suddenly another interviewer who was from Guwahati himself: Where do you live in Guwahati?

Looks like he was up for it (he had Googled some local Guwahati spots the night before). He confidently said to him: Sir, Pan Bazaar. (Again, not the Paltan Bazaar which is the train station area and anyone would know)

They were clean in the same place.

P. S: He was the only one who was selected "Outside the Northeast" of the total of 45 selections of that year of all the institutes.

He mentioned that later, once his teacher had told him "In the Bhagwad Gita it is written, The lie that is for a noble cause and does not harm anyone is not a lie" :)

Something about GoI's 2022 mission on vocational training. (I did not know) But the current topic asked for suggestions on how to improve the quality of professional training provided within this program and the programs carried out previously.

Extrassss:

  1. I noticed that almost all candidates with trade experience had their interviews of about 30-40 minutes each. Mine was much shorter.
  2. IIMB requests a SOP and also three teacher / supervisor recommendations in advance. So, they already know about some important incidents / experiences of yours.

Me: (I had read an opinion in 'Hindu' only 2 days before) I started to explain. (He was interrupted by P2)

Topic: Is social inclusion necessary for economic inclusion?

(Many wrote about reservations and the inclusion of castes. I was not surprised! I was completely tangential to what many wrote, but what I felt was relevant to the topic at hand. I touched on India's international relations with the US. , Israel and China and how the Indian community intermixed with the natives helped cross discreet economic bridges. In addition, don’t lie about your references. It is rare nowadays that people don’t check references. When I was working, I always checked with my references to make sure that it was still okay to use them and that their contact information and job title was accurate.

While I was working for the above-mentioned organization, my mother’s friend, Harpy2, told her daughter that it was fine to use me as a reference. I had spoken with this young woman a few times on the phone and never met her in person. I only found out because Harpy2’s daughter was late to work on her first day. Always ask before you use someone as a reference. Don’t lie during your interview about anything. Do your homework about the organization before you go for your interview. It is easy to check for details to see if you are truthful about your qualifications. If the interviewer likes you, they might call you if some other position comes up in the organization. For some people, shoes may be the most important fact, others the color of peoples skin, to even others facial hair. In addition, internally, very few people are heroes, not villains, in their own internal stories. Also, as a species, we are really, really good at self-justification.

Personally, we live in a dishonest world. Politicians make promises they don’t intend to keep (oh boy do they); Advertisements, unless limited by law, will tell you about the great things you get of the product and virtually none of the bad results. Look at your Social Media feed which I can virtually guarantee you are full of untruths and half-truths.

Consider in our own lives. If you are a husband how many times have you answered your wife directly when asked “does this dress make me look fat?” If you are a wife or girlfriend, how many times have you outright laughed at your significant other when he is attempting to look sexy and failing miserably??

So, why do we do this?

  • We, in almost all cases, try to present ourselves in the best light when with strangers. Maybe this is instinctual. We will dress up, tell interesting stories, focus on our positive traits and minimize negative ones, forget about our brother who is in jail, and our own reality to try to impress. For some, this happens more, or less, depending on life choices, age, acceptance from others, etc. Only as we start to know the other person do we open up.
  • Virtually all of us, in our internal story, think of ourselves as the heroes (or maybe the victims), but not the villains. We self-justify ALL the time. I’m sure that most of us consider ourselves law abiding, but how many people drive the actual speed limit or below at all times? Do you include any tax deductions which are subject to perception? Are you using a computer or phone from work right now for personal use? Oh, we justify all day long because we deserve it.
  • We are so ingrained in a dishonest world that stretching the truth and omitting important facts is considered acceptable. Somewhere along the way, we decided it is the problem of the perceiver to determine the truth, not the speaker. Look at the modern “news” programs that feel no responsibility to fact-check their statements. Look at car commercials. Buy that car you can’t afford, and you get to go on all these trips that you couldn’t afford before you bought the car. It’s not new. Remember, drinking the right alcohol and smoking the right cig makes you sexier.
  • We survive in society because of “white lies.” Let’s be intellectually honest with ourselves, we accept the idea of “white lies” A lie about a small or unimportant matter that someone tells to avoid hurting another person. In my online store, I sell a shirt “I’m Sorry I’m Late … I just didn’t want to come.” That brutally honest statement sounds great, but tell that to your parents the next time you have a family gathering you must attend.
  • We think our lives are boring. I don’t use much Social Media, but I see mine and my wife’s family, and I will tell you the lives of travel and excitement that is posted is NOT the reality we talk about at reunions.

So, back to the question. Why do most people lie on their job interviews? The simple answer is because we lie to ourselves, and others almost so automatically we are not even aware of it. We are not actively trying to deceive anyone, but we are more trying to have them perceive our better selves. You have heard that Perception is everything … there you have it.

Remember, Interviews are like dating, and I have knows more than one couple that they were not aware that the other actually went to the bathroom until they were living together. We want people to perceive the image of our perfect selves. It is lying in a philosophical sense, but most are really not trying to actively deceive anyone … they just want that better self to be perceived.

Now there are people who break the social constructs of lying to the point of deception. In a job interview, it is a waste of time since it almost never works long term. If you are not qualified to do a job, all the stories in the world that get you hired aren’t going to help you do the actual job once hired.

That said, some people THINK that they ARE capable, but they just need to have a chance. Sometimes this is self-delusion, like the guy pretending to be a Doctor, but other times they can be successful. In these cases, it can be active deception since they really want the position, and depending on the situation, it is very difficult to be caught. As an example how can you tell if someone managed 15 people, or 30?

If you don’t put that company on your resume, then a background check showing you worked there will raise question likely to eliminate you from contention, and you’ll have an employment gap in your resume that you’ll need to explain (or lie about, starting the whole “grounds for termination” cycle over again. This lie can ruin your career prospects for the rest of your career.
  7. If employment is being sought from a state or federal employer, it is often a crime to lie on an application.
  8. If you obtained your job by lying on a resume, you may not be able to sue your employer, even if your employer has violated your legal rights at some later date, like if there is gender /racial discrimination. If the employer does something illegal, courts have upheld that you usually can not be recover against your employer if your employer can show that they would have not hired you in the first place if you had been honest on your resume or application.

Why take such a risk when your career is at stake? If you are not getting a job, then it is better that you look into yourself and groom yourself better, rather than lying on a resume. The long-term consequences and likelihood of being found out make lying one of the most idiotic career decisions one can make. If you have already lied, politely withdraw from the job search before you’re found out, and don’t lie to the next potential employer
