At my second job, I was working on a rotating training program at another bank. The premise of the training was to take us (the college hires) through several 6-month rotations through the company and get better exposure to what the company does. To be frank, the show sucked. Everyone complained and we all left. Eventually, with so many members of our class leaving, the management running the training was fired.

My third company is a company that I started on my own. We are still growing and doing well. It is a Silicon Valley-based startup in the educational technology space.

I wish I could give you some advice on how to select the right job, but as you can see, my selections so far have not helped. But this is still an experience! I can say with certainty that I will not forget all the things that happened at those first two firms. I will not forget how management does not normally trust the people below them and how arrogance makes one go blind. I take these lessons as they come.

I suggest that you ask yourself every so often where do you see yourself after accepting that job? Is it a promotion in the same company? Graduate school? Your own company? If it's not going to help you get there, get out.

The best thing about the race is that you can always shape it. It is easier to shape it at the beginning; so definitely be proactive. But he is not paralyzed at any time.
