I am simply an Apple user. I never worked there and obviously did not know Steve personally or professionally.

Steve really stood out in 2 ways. First: you always knew when and what customers expected of new technologies. Until the release of the iPhone (the first), touchscreens weren't as reliable as they are now. However, to create a truly next-gen phone, a multi-touch screen was a must. Steve realized that for the iPhone to work, Apple had to come up with cutting-edge technology. It should be able to track multiple touches at the same time, etc. Now the actual technology they came up with may not be 100% developed by Apple (which is why ignorant people tend to call it cmd-c + cmd-v) but Apple was definitely the first company to know exactly when to use this. technology.

The second, I think, has a lot to do with the first. Steve paid incredible attention to detail. I knew it's all about details and that a single missing detail could ruin the product. He really thought about the products, although many users and reviewers never tend to realize that. For example: although people might argue that the smartphone / big screen design may not have been invented by Apple, the home button really was. I can't think of any other place where it would fit better than at the bottom of the screen. The button is exactly as big as the average thumb, which makes it extremely convenient.
It is also one of two hardware buttons (strictly speaking 5), so they also realized that this button has a dedicated task in the user experience and cannot be simulated by displaying it on the touch screen (a bug that the most companies committed and still commit before the iPhone).

I think most companies don't think as much about their products as Steve Jobs. Partly because Steve paid so much attention to detail and partly because he was never satisfied. This is the GCD in most of the world's successful people: they are never satisfied. This makes them want to continually improve their product (which is what Steve did) even though many people would already describe it as good enough to perfect it.

I also think Steve deserves more credit for brainstorming than he usually gets. There are many stories of employees telling Steve what they had been building and then Steve calling stupid etc. Then the next day the same idea occurred to him and he pretended it was his.
I don't think these ideas were the same. Steve just found the key detail that would make the idea work (for example, an iPhone without a home button or with a physical keyboard would not have been as successful as in reality).

I think the consumer tech sentiment and attention to detail or inability to be satisfied was what made Steve successful.

Steve Jobs was lucky to meet Steve Wozniak. One wonders what would have happened to Jobs if he hadn't met Woz. I suspect I could have gotten it right anyway, somehow. I wonder how my life could have changed if Jobs or Woz or both had appeared on the Byte Shop the day I checked out the original Apple II. I suspect there might have been a historical conversation, but there was no one in the room when I evaluated the Apple II and decided it was a bit clunky, except for the nice circuit board and case. I was especially put off by the use of the mass storage audio recorder and did not like that the TV was used as a monitor. I wanted the whole enchilada and went on my way.
I have met very bright and educated people in the industry who did or are doing quite well, but they are not spectacular. On the other hand, I have met some people who did or are doing quite well with no formal education beyond high school. You even started a business when you were in high school. As the king of Siam said, "it is a perplexity."
When transistors became available, many people studied and spent money to learn how they worked and how they could be used in circuits. Others, and probably Woz was one, just got components of one form or another and started connecting them together to form useful circuits. There was certainly some trial and error involved, but these "circuit designers" advanced the industry. I remember suggesting to one of those designers that he take some courses to help him design better circuits and earn more money. Said, "John, I'd love it if you had the time." At the same time, there were people sitting in classrooms learning the fundamentals of electricity, a good but very slow path to success. The college dropouts who have made billions are legendary.

Steve Jobs dropped the first iPad into an aquarium to check the "empty" space (if any) in it. When the iPod bottomed out, the air bubbles were clearly visible.
