One fine evening, I was having a snack with a friend, when I received an email from a Google recruiter, asking if I was interested in discussing software engineering opportunities at Google. He called me the next day and scheduled a phone interview.

The telephone interview went smoothly. The interviewer was kind and asked me a complex PD problem, which I was able to solve (thankfully). My recruiter called me the next day, with the good news that I had made it to the on-site rounds, which he scheduled for about 3 weeks later at the Bangalore office.

I had 5 rounds of on-site interviews. The interviewers were mostly friendly, with a few exceptions. They evaluated me mainly in DP, DFS, BFS, Probability and some aspects of Design. All things considered, my interviews went smoothly for the most part.

Exactly ten days later, I received a call from another recruiter. He began by saying (and I quote) - “Hello Tejasi. I am very sorry to inform you that we will not move forward with your candidacy. If you still want to be considered, reapply after 6 months. " Trying to understand what they had just told me, I asked him about the comments he had received. He explained that the hiring committee didn't think my problem-solving skills were up to par. Just as I was about to end the call, he interrupted me and said, “I was joking with you. Congratulations, we offer you a job at Google Bangalore for the position of software engineer ”: D

Turns out, I was the first candidate from my recruiter to get an offer. We end by thanking each other: D

My learnings:

  1. Your LinkedIn profile is much more important than you think. You can get interview calls from good companies based on how attractive your LinkedIn profile appears to recruiters.
  2. It is very important that you communicate your ideas clearly to the interviewer; it is your thought process that you ultimately want to test.
  3. Do not give up. Even if you completely screw up an interview, don't let that affect your thinking. I screwed up an entire interview and still got an offer. Interviews on the Google site are not definitive interviews - the hiring committee looks at the big picture and not the individual comments of the interviewers.

With that said, I personally believe that Google interviews are accessible to just about anyone who is ready to put in the effort to improve their coding and problem-solving skills. You don't have to have an Einstein brain to get through interviews successfully.

I covered this in another answer, but the bottom line is to have concrete results. Results that demonstrate your skills and competence for the job. They can be,

  • An active GitHub handle with quality repositories
  • Good performance in competitive programming contests
  • Various projects that demonstrate your skill
  • Research Articles: Their importance in technology interviews is debatable, but they surely demonstrate your ability to perform on long-term projects.

Preparation for interviews:

You have strengthened your foundations, now is the time to challenge the most critical part. This stage can be divided into the following,

  • Getting Started - This is the initial stage where you primarily research and become familiar with the interview process. Reviewing data structures and algorithms should be your main focus at this time. Some useful resources,
    • Blogs, official Google site
    • Interview help books (for example, how to decipher the coding interview)
  • Practice - This is where the actual preparation happens. You need to choose a language and start coding in it. This is a good time to start coding on the board. You should also start practicing the specific interview questions now. Here are some resources to help you practice.
    • InterviewBit
    • LeetCode
    • GeekForGeeks
  • Consolidation: We are in the final stages before the actual interviews, now is the time to consolidate what we know. One important thing in the last few weeks would be to practice solving questions "out loud." Doing mock interviews can also help you perform much better in real business.

That would help in immigration later on, as we get extra points for that. I applied for more than 50 companies from India. I received 2 responses. I had attended 2 Skype interviews, but the response was "get in touch once we land, if there is openness, you may consider"

For someone to get a job from outside, companies must show that such a job description cannot be completed through local hiring and only someone with your expertise in skill set X can. That is quite a tedious process that no company wants to go through.

Here, most of the recruiting is done through agency / consultant / friend referrals and all require your presence in person for a face-to-face meeting. With so much fraudulent activity in terms of fake interviews, fake candidates, representatives attending interviews for another, the credibility of the candidate is under scrutiny in most cases.

I am not saying that it is impossible to get a job offer from India, just that the chances are less and your resume should stand out for having such an opportunity.

Why just Google? Are there other companies that do not employ legal professionals? Or, have you heard from somewhere that at Google, everyone receives millions of rupees in salary and no work, all fun, no responsibilities! They will take care of the next 20 generations once a person joins them !!!
