From what I've learned since January is that this is an industry you should only decide to pursue if you have a genuine interest - despite what people may say, it's not as easy as it sounds.

As others have said in this feed so far, the best option would be to start by creating and / or growing your social profiles to show that you are actively trying to gain followers. While it may seem vain, today, digital presence is everything to a business. If you can show that you can do it yourself without a product / service, you can definitely do it with a business.

I would also recommend, as Erica said, knowing where you are strong and where your passions are. For me, I am quite creative, especially coming from the media.

Look for positions that may be local to you. From interviews I have been in prior to this position (I was previously working for David Lloyd doing digital marketing before I had to leave), I found that many companies value personality and aspirations as opposed to direct experience. Take that with a grain of salt though, if you're trying to land a position with a large company, they are likely to focus more on the experience you have.

Alternatively, you can try going the freelance route and once you have experience with that, use it to get a steady job in the field. There are so many digital marketing branching options that if once you are experienced and find a potential route that you would like to take, it is easier to transition into that role than it would be in the vast majority of industries.

I think I am the perfect person to answer this question because I have. So here are my two cents for switching to digital marketing if you are new to digital marketing.

Like my fellow comrades in their early 20s, I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. There were days when I wanted to become a baker and then there were days when being the manager of a great football club sounded like a lucrative idea. And like my fellow comrades in their 20s, I had no idea why I wanted to do what I wanted at the time or how to do it. All of this happened while working at a large retail brand as a finance / HR management trainee.

One fine day, a wise man (who was apparently my younger cousin) asked me to think about what I really liked. So I thought. And then I thought some more. Followed by a little more thought. And I realized that two things that I really liked were numbers and literature. I loved reading, writing, solving complicated math problems, and the like.

So I started looking for jobs that revolved around these two skills. And all the other Google websites gave me an answer: digital marketing.

I researched the digital marketing space and spoke to a few people in the industry to understand what a typical day looks like for a digital marketer. It all sounded great to me, so I decided to apply for digital marketing jobs.

But this is where the big hurdle hit me. The big infinite loop where you need experience for a job and you need a job to gain experience. I looked for multiple opportunities but the problem was the lack of jobs for people like me who worked in a very different field and had no experience in digital marketing. However, one day I ran into my current employer, Growisto, through a Facebook ad (speak irony when you come across a digital marketing job made possible through good digital marketing)

Growisto had a very simple question for candidates: be good analytically, have good communication skills, and adapt to the culture. And like their older Silicon Valley brothers, they didn't care about my education. The reason this was important to me was that I am not an engineer. I did my hotel management at IHM, PUSA and then worked in HR and finance functions. So when they told me that I could join them without any digital marketing experience, I was elated.

I had several rounds of the Growisto interview and none asked me for prior marketing experience. It was analytics, case studies, cultural rounds, and I loved the interview process.

Cut to the present, it's been over 1.5 years at Growisto and I couldn't have asked for a better move in my career. I started learning about digital marketing on my first day at Growisto and to this day, each day has been full of learning and new experiences.

For someone who did not know the basics of SEO to do technical rounds for our SEO division of Google, I have come a long way.

I have worked with several clients whose traffic ranges from 50 per month to over 1.5 million per month. I have been part of some of the most creative marketing solutions for our clients. I've seen traffic spikes and drops due to major updates from Google. And through all this and more, one thing has remained constant. And that's the team. I couldn't be more proud of the team we've built here at Growisto. This family has given me strength, incredible friends, skills and, most importantly, a lot of learning.

I am currently in a transition where I am moving from my first love, Google's SEO division to Amazon's marketing division, and for me the learnings have never stopped:

  • I learned how important it is to hurry, without hard work, there is no reward.
  • I learned the four very important words, "I don't know." Both co-founders Kiran and Pritesh have fostered this absolutely amazing thought in my mind that it's okay not to know things. As long as you start learning after realizing it, everything is fine.
  • Another great thing I learned here was that it's okay to make mistakes. I still remember how amazed I was when I realized that every week there are candy yells where people tell the biggest mistake they made during that week in front of the whole team and were rewarded with candy. Honestly, it was a culture shock for me!
  • I learned how important it is to hone your team's management skills because without your team, your accomplishments are meaningless.

All in all, if you ask me, I consider joining Growisto to be one of the best decisions for my career. I have seen a tremendous increase in my learning, in aspects of my career and in the long term I see a future where I am doing what I love and I see a sea of ​​opportunities in front of me. 1. Learn the basics

You wouldn't try to enter any career without knowing the basics and the same applies to digital marketing.

When it comes to interviews, you need to make sure that you can understand and answer any questions that come your way. So, you need to take your time and understand the difference between SEO and SEM, learn what SERP is, and become familiar with the latest social media techniques.

It also helps if you research some of the top campaigns on the digital channel that interests you the most. That way, you can see how digital insights are executed in real life through campaigns. It will also impress the hiring company or agency if you can talk about the latest Coca-Cola or Nike campaigns, for example.

2. Build a personal brand (and practice those basics)

This should come as no surprise knowing that almost all companies will search for you on social media and also Google your name if they see your CV and are interested in interviewing you. In addition to making sure there aren't too many loud college photos you've been tagged in on Facebook, you should also work on your personal branding.

Maybe get away from the Twitter bio of 'I like gin and cake' and switch to something a little more professional and aspirational: 'Digital marketer looking for opportunities' or 'Social media enthusiast' etc.

It also helps to use a more professional image as your profile picture and use it on all your public-facing social profiles (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram) and start sharing some content on these channels that is relevant to social media. This could be retweeting the latest Drum articles from time to time or commenting on trending hashtags related to digital marketing.

You should also consider creating your own blog to share marketing ideas and articles, but also promote this blog through social media, including email marketing.

3. Work for free

Working for free carries a lot of stigma, especially in recent years, but if you are looking to embark on a career that you have no experience for, then you should start filling out the CV with something a little more. relevant than the year you spent working behind a bar while in college.

Offering your services to smaller businesses is a good starting point. If there's a particular independent café or bar that you visit frequently, ask them if they'd like help managing their blogs or social media channels.

Small charities are also interested in volunteering, and of course you can approach local digital agencies to request a few weeks' work experience. Be sure to highlight your current skills and share links to your digital assets to help you get through the door!

4. Make the most of your work experience

If you manage to get a placement with a digital agency, you must recognize that it is not how long you were there that matters, it is what you actually did. Get involved whenever you can, especially in larger campaigns. Recognize all the opportunities you have to improve your CV. Is your line manager preparing a copy for a national retail chain mailer? Offer to write it down instead. You can then legitimately say that as part of your placement you worked on that brand's email marketing campaigns.

The same can be said if you're doing extra work remotely for that local cafe or charity. Everything you post, share links on your Twitter and link from your blog. As a result, your personal brand begins to develop further.

5. Create the perfect CV and start applying

You've done the hard graft, so now all that's left to do is take that experience and put it on paper. Once your CV is ready and with all the great experience you have gained, start applying for jobs. Be realistic: A couple of weeks or a few months of work experience and experience probably won't qualify you for the marketing manager position, but it will certainly help you get calls for junior and executive roles.
